A few rainy day thoughts during my visit to Baptist Hill Cemetery in Auburn, Alabama. Opened in the late 1800s, this fascinating site served as the city’s first “black” cemetery. The property contains over 500 marked graves, as well as many, many more unmarked graves. The oldest grave dates to 1879. Many of those buried here began their lives as slaves, and later found success and freedom as teachers, business people, and laborers after emancipation.
